Mamata Banerjee's Moral Bankruptcy

Mamata Banerjee's rallying cry of "Parivartan" (Change) stormed her into power as Chief Minister of West Bengal ousting the three decades of continuous misrule of the Left parties in 2011 State Assembly elections. Entire people of West Bengal, with a lot of hope and aspirations, trusted Mamata Banerjee to bring the "Parivartan".

This Economic Times article explains how the supporters of "Parivartan" have been left dejected and disappointed. This article in Hindustan Times explains how her 8 years of autocratic rule has been riddled with huge scams like Sarada, Narada and Rose Valley scams. She seems to forget that this is a democracy, free speech is a fundamental right and hence one should be open to criticism and opposing views. It was utterly disgraceful when she arrested a Chemistry Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra of the prestigious Jadavpur University over a political cartoon and it resulted in a widespread outrage. Finally, the Kolkata High Court ordered the Mamata Banerjee Government to pay compensation to the Professor.

Mamata Banerjee seems to forget that in a democracy every single time she has to get elected to come back to power. She cannot claim power as a matter of entitlement. Her greed and lust for power are so much that it forces her to behave in a fascist fashion and she appears highly paranoid of any kind of criticism and highly fears the possibility of electoral defeat. She gets extremely agitated and angry when supporters of opposing party raise slogans such as "Jai Shri Ram" as reported by this India Today article. This article summarizes Mamata's brand of politics.

Mamata's ethics and morality hit new lows when she carried the Muslim Appeasement Politics to an extreme extent. She said that she would attend "Iftar Parties" over 100 times to please the Muslim community. These articles from NDTV and DailyMail discuss how Mamata's Appeasement Politics have created a real danger and heavily damaged the social fabric of West Bengal. On another occasion, Kolkata High Court slammed her Appeasement Politics and reprimanded her for creating communal distinction and disturbing the peace and harmony. If not for our esteemed judiciary, these people would have made a complete mockery of our democracy.

After her party's poor showing at the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, she got rattled and vowed to stand by the minorities. In her paranoia, her choice of words was of very poor class and did not go down well with the Muslim community. She said, “I appease Muslims…. Will do it 100 times as there is no harm in taking kicks from a cow that gives you milk". Several Muslim clerics and academics termed her Muslim appeasement remarks as unfortunate and humiliating.

She brazenly admits that since 30% of her electorate are Muslims she has to cater to them and appease them. All she has to do is just consider the entire electorate and serve all 100% of the electorate treating them equally without any favoritism or prejudice. Appeasement politics is poisonous, divides the people along communal lines and destroys social harmony. Such people are always after power and money, have no vision for the development and future of the state and have no real concern for the needs and sufferings of the people.

We, the people of India have to see through the myopic politics practiced by pseudo-secular parties like Mamta's Trinamool Congress that have no policy, philosophy, and futuristic vision. We have to vote as Indians and at the state level as Bengalis. The religion is our private affair and should remain within the walls of our homes. This is what was practiced by our true patriots who fought for our nation's independence and made extraordinary sacrifices and even gave their lives for the nation. The 2019 Lok Sabha election results are showing indications of such united thinking and rejection of caste or religion based thinking. BJP has swept to power because people across all castes and religion have supported them and voted for them. This is a great indication and augurs well for the unity of the nation.
